Hormones
are chemical messengers that control bodily functions. Body's hormonal
levels deplete with age. By measuring a patient's level of hormones, a
balanced hormone replacement can be prescribed to restore hormone levels
to where they were in the patient's early 30s. In many cases, this can
be done naturally with secretogogues, which release the hormones already
made by the body.
Secretagogues, or releasers, are substances that stimulate secreting organs.
There are many substances that stimulate the release of growth hormone
from the pituitary—these include several amino acids and drugs. Exercise
is also a powerful releaser of growth hormone.
Complete Hormone Profiles aid in the Physicians determination if the
person is in need of a Hormone Replacement Program, a Detoxification program,
bio-identical creams, supplementation for adrenal support and/or insulin
resistance.

It’s almost never too late; however, the sooner one begins, the more benefits
is derived from an improved quality of life. The people who benefit most
are those who are motivated to stay healthy in their later years. It's
not just for seniors or retirees. Just as people save for retirement with
pensions, preventive geriatrics helps a person save for a healthier future.

Aging is an accumulation of damaged macromolecules in cells, tissues and
organs. It can be prevented by reducing the rate of aging damage, by periodic
replacement of damaged tissues, or by molecular repair or rejuvenation of
deteriorated cells and tissues.
Research shows that there are, in fact, two distinct types of aging. Aging
caused by the genes we inherit is called intrinsic (internal) aging. The
other type of aging is known as extrinsic (external) aging and is caused
by environmental factors, such as exposure to the sun’s rays.

Intrinsic aging, also known as the natural aging process, is a continuous
process that normally begins in our mid-20s. Within the skin, collagen production
slows, and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place,
has a bit less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly and turnover
of new skin cells may decrease slightly. While these changes usually begin
in our 20s, the signs of intrinsic aging are typically not visible for decades.
The signs of intrinsic aging are:
- Fine wrinkles
- Thin and transparent skin
- Loss of underlying fat, leading to hollowed cheeks and eye sockets as
well as noticeable loss of firmness on the hands and neck
- Bones shrink away from the skin due to bone loss, which causes sagging
skin
- Dry skin that may itch
- Graying hair that eventually turns white
- Hair loss
- Unwanted hair
- Nail plate thins, the half moons disappear, and ridges develops
Genes control how quickly the normal aging process unfolds. Some notice
those first gray hairs in their 20s; others do not see graying until their
40s.

A number of extrinsic, or external, factors often act together with the
normal aging process to prematurely age our skin. Most premature aging
is caused by sun exposure. Other external factors that prematurely age
our skin are repetitive facial expressions, gravity, sleeping positions,
and smoking.
While one cannot stop or even slow down the intrinsic aging process, he
can prevent signs of premature aging by protecting your skin from the
sun, quitting smoking, and eliminating facial exercises.
A number of treatments are available. Injectable fillers and botulinum
toxin are suitable for people with busy lifestyles who do not want the
inconvenience of a long recovery. Radiofrequency is a procedure that offers
an alternative to the traditional facelift. Dermabrasion, laser resurfacing,
chemical peeling, microdermabrasion, and some topical treatments can restore
skin, giving it a smoother and refreshed appearance.
Scientific research in the field of anti-aging continues to give rise
to new and promising treatment options. A dermatologist can help sort
the numerous options, including the myriad of over-the-counter product.

A healthy lifestyle, caloric restriction with adequate nutrution (CRAN),
and perhaps even supplements can do no more than slow the aging process
or extend mean lifespan. Aging is unavoidable, but major physical impairment
is not. People can lead a healthy, disability-free life well through their
later years. A well established support system of family, friends, and
health care providers, together with focus on good nutrition and lifestyle
habits and good stress management, can prevent disease and lessen the
impact of chronic conditions. For the most part, doctors prescribe medications
to control the symptoms and diseases of aging. Estrogen replacement therapy
(ERT) is commonly prescribed to postmenopausal women for symptoms of aging.
ERT functions to help keep bones strong, reduce risk of heart disease,
restore vaginal lubrication, and to improve skin elasticity. Knowing one's
hormonal helath status is thus very important to know the current physical
conditions and take immediate action to prevent diseases and slow aging
process.

- New research: long-term physical activity slows aging on
the cellular level, www.naturalnews.com
(NaturalNews) Telomeres, regions of DNA which protect the ends of chromosomes
from destruction, have made big news in 2009. In fact, the Nobel Prize
in Physiology or Medicine was awarded this year to researchers who investigated
the nature of telomeres. Why all the interest? It appears telomeres
hold the key to why we age because when a cell becomes old and dies,
it's due to the shortening of chromosomal telomeres. So, if you could
keep the length of telomeres from changing, that might literally halt
aging. And now comes research showing there is a natural way to impact
telomeres and produce an anti-aging effect -- long-term physical activity.
According to research just reported in the journal Circulation, intensive
exercise can prevent a shortening of telomeres. That, the scientists
found, results in a protective effect against aging on a cellular level
and could be especially important in keeping the cardiovascular system
healthy. So, while you can slather on expensive creams and opt for plastic
surgery, if you want to actually slow down aging, your best bet is to
get moving and exercise regularly.
- Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-aging effect on cells, www.naturalnews.com
(NaturalNews) As NaturalNews has previously reported, omega-3s, the
fatty acids found primarily in cold water fish like salmon, have a host
of health benefits, including alleviating depression (http://www.naturalnews.com/027285_o...),
preventing age-related blindness (http://www.naturalnews.com/026856_o...)
and protecting against prostate cancer (http://www.naturalnews.com/026752_c...).
And now there's evidence omega-3s may have a profound anti-aging effect,
too.
Telomeres, structures at the end of chromosomes that are involved in
the stability and replication of chromosomes, are markers of biological
aging. Genetic factors, exposure to certain chemicals and environmental
stressors shorten the length of telomeres and are believed to contribute
to the aging process. New research just published in the Journal of
the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows that omega-3s slow down
the shortening of telomeres -- this means omega-3 fatty acids may protect
against aging on a cellular level.
