What is DNA Testing?
DNA testing is the most advanced technique of establishing or disapproving a biological relationship. DNA testing analyses DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) and accurately identifies relationships between people from their own unique and individual DNA. Each of us inherits half of our DNA from our father and the remaining half from mother allowing our DNA to be matched against other individuals to confirm if there is a biological relationship. DNA testing has become a virtual necessity, especially in the absence of adequate primary and secondary records.

How do DNA test usually work?
The test is based upon the principles of inheritance.

The test reveals a control batch of genetic markers from all parties. The genetic markers that the child shares with the mother are first located. Then to determine paternity, the child’s remaining markers are compared to the alleged father. If the man is indeed the father, all of the markers that did not match the mother’s should match his. If all of the child’s remaining markers match the father, evidence is provided that he is the biological father of the child. If do not match, he is excluded as the biological father of the child.

Genetic testing may be used as evidence in comparing samples of victims and suspects in violent and non-violent crimes.

How to collect the samples? - Sampling is simple.
Samples for testing may be obtained by using cotton swabs to collect cells by stroking the lining of the inner cheek. The process is especially useful for newborns and small children. It is pain free and as effective as blood sample with virtually no recollection.

Abnormal specimen testing- Genetic testing can sometimes be performed on an aged blood, bone, tissue sample, chewed gum, cigarette buds, electric razor debris, semen stains, hard candy, tooth brushes and many others.
