Human Papilloma Virus testing
A human papillomavirus (HPV) test is done to find a high-risk
HPV infection in women. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
An HPV test checks for the genetic material (DNA) of the human papillomavirus.
Like a Pap test, an HPV test is done on a sample of cells collected
from the cervix. The test minimizes the risk of misdiagnosis because
it is DNA-based, the accuracy of results are undisputed.
Pap Smears have always been the gold standard technique used in
diagnosis of early cervical cancer, however, little progress in
this method has been made in the last 50 years, and the sensitivity
and false negatives still remain an issue.
At Eastern Biotech, we use a Liquid Based Cytology testing method
whereby the cells collected from the cervical swab are stabilized
by being put in a liquid solution. This enables a more accurate
result when analysed under the microscope when compared to a traditional
pap smear. For the Pap smear, they use a dry swab and therefore
the collected cells can rapidly dry out and deteriorate; making
diagnosis more difficult. Hence there are a high number of false
negative results. The liquid based cytology that we offer therefore
provides reassurance that results are more reliable.
Genital HPV infection is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that
is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Human papillomavirus is
the name of a group of viruses that includes more than 100 different
strains or types. More than 30 of these viruses are sexually transmitted,
and they can infect the genital area of men and women including
the skin of the penis, vulva (area outside the vagina), or anus,
and the linings of the vagina, cervix, or rectum.
Why HPV testing is essential
- To accurately determine if there is a presence of the Human
Papilloma Virus.
- To assess the future risk of cancer and determine optimal
time of treatment.
- HPV has been established as the major etiological (causative)
agent for cervical cancer.
- HPV detection is associated with a minimum 100-fold increased
risk of high-grade CIN (Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia.
- Women with normal Pap Smears but with High Risk HPV types
are at an increased risk of subsequent CIN within few years.
- HPV Test predicts the risk of progression to a more severe
disease.
